Eat What You Listen To

Last week in Detroit, a local chef paid tribute to Radiohead in an unexpected way – through cuisine. Local chef Kyle Hanley worked with sommelier Joseph Allerton to present “A Night with Kid A”. The 10-course meal accompanied the 10-song 2000 album, which, of course, was played as diners feasted on unique cuisine (like oil-poached monkfish, white asparagus, white balsamic vinaigrette & daikon sprouts, with Leelanau Good Harbour Golden Ale).

Interested in recreating this magical moment? We’re thinking Sunday morning pancakes, syrup, coffee, turning off the cell phone & “How to Disappear Completely”. Read the full story on the Kid A restaurant experience right here.

Historic Detroit Recording Studio Getting New Life

Historic Detroit recording studio, United Sound Systems, is back. It’s been a slow process, but the institution founded in the early 1930s has survived vacancy, transfer of ownership and even the risk of being demolished due to the expansion of a nearby expressway. Now open 7 days a week for studio time and tours, United Sound Systems still isn’t out of the woods – but will hopefully be receiving help from the Detroit Sound Conservancy in the near future. You can read the full story right here.

Would You Like a Cup of Dumb Coffee?

Oh to live on the east side of Los Angeles. Recently a new coffee shop opened up in Los Feliz called “Dumb Starbucks”. Everything from the look & feel of the location to the menu is very reminescent of the original Starbucks with one exception. The term “dumb” proceeds every word you read. Now you may ask, how are they getting away with this? We were perplexed too. While a lawsuit is undoubtedly eminent, the owners have stated that the facility, and subsequent products, are art. Hence, within their legal rights. While we wait to see how this plays out in court, do you have that new (dumb) Starbuck’s Caramel Flan Latte? Great. I’ll take a (dumb) venti. Marvin Gaye’s Lost Passport Surfaces at Garage Sale

A Motown Museum employee was recently picking up some items from an estate sale when he decided to purchase a few records for himself, being sold for 25-50 cents. When he got home to listen to his finds, he got a pretty big surprise – the 1964 passport of Detroit native Marvin Gaye. Even more surprising is it’s worth. An appraiser valued the lost passport at $20k. Sometimes, garage sale-ing pays off. We bet the music aficionado was pretty happy just with the records. Check out the full story here.
